Years passed and the industry eventually declined as fashions changed and the demand for these items dwindled, but the Wardown Park Museum keeps history alive by having collected a multitude of priceless pieces of delicate lace fabrics and hats spanning more than 150 years of Luton’s history.

The gallery also features an average of four temporary exhibitions per year at different intervals, having featured art pieces such as their recent “Reincarnated Rubbish” exhibition, a collection that focuses on beautifully crafted sculptures and jewelry made from trash and recycled materials.

The museum is highly interactive, featuring touch activated computer screens, on-hands exhibits, and a lovely tea room selling snacks and refreshments. Best of all, the museum is open to the public and is free of charge to enter.

Stockwood Discovery Centre

Another free admission museum is the Stockwood Discovery Centre, formerly known as the Stockwood Craft Museum. This museum features a more social-archaeological approach to its collection, with two main exhibits: The Bagshawe Gallery and the Mossman Collection.

The Bagshawe Gallery features the life and history of the Lutonian people. This collection includes various crafts such as minted coins, and the famous Wenlock Jug. It also features the life stories of the Anglo-Saxons and the Romans. The gallery displays various items brought in by the Romans such as fabrics, make-up, and food containers, and also features a reconstructed Roman villa based on excavations made in Puddlehill.

The Mossman Collection on the other hand, is the highlight of the museum’s exhibits. It houses the largest collection of horse-drawn carriages in Europe, including both renovated vehicles and reconstructed ones. The horse-drawn road vehicles on display include a multitude of British carriages, some of them even dating all the way back to 50 BC when Great Britain was under the rule of the Roman Empire. The carriages range from the simple wooden vehicles used by British laymen and traders, to the exquisitely crafted luxury coaches used by the Royal family and nobility.
